Facebook Friends One way? or Two Way?

As an ardent fan of the famous music band Grateful Dead, I sent a request to friend its lyricist John Perry Barlow on Facebook. He being famous and busy left my request unanswered and I can see his page with the following message.

That is quiet understandable considering the status of Mr. Barlow. However, luckily I started getting his messages in my facebook live feed. Like this one

That is fine with me because that was my intent to begin with because I can not imagine myself being friend's with people like John Perry Barlow. A fan yes.

But it raises a question? I always thought that on facebook we have a two way friendship where both people share stuff unlike Twitter where one can have unlimited followers and the person is under no obligation to follow its own followers.

What am I missing here?
